19th Century Trousers. Trousers became increasingly fashionable in the first quarter of the 19th century. At first they were only worn for day and informal dress but by the 1820s they were acceptable for evening wear. Breeches continued to be worn at court. Reference: Victoria and Albert Museum.

Pleated trousers (hakama) for two-piece suit (hitatare) Japanese Edo Period 19th century
Trousers for two-piece suit (hitatare) which includes pleated trousers (hakama) in green and purple iridescent silk with four broad padded ties at the waist and open 1/4 of the way down the side seam. The double-width sleeve jacket is open in front with two silk tie cords for closure; pleated front lapels taper to the waist and would be worn tucked inside the top of the hakama; plaited, ikat-dyed, blue and white silk cords are laced through the outer edges of the sleeves. The hitatare is a formal suit worn by men of the warrior class. Plaited cords (kikutoji) are applied to the shoulder seams and trouser seams to prevent ripping during movement.

While formal daywear grew very dark and sombre in colour during the latter half of the 19th century, light fabrics, plaids and stripes were favoured for casual dress. These trousers taper to the ankle, characteristic of the early 1870s. They have no waistband and are held up with braces.
The hips and upper part of the legs are cut full, but the latter tapers to the ankle. The waist is high behind, with fly front and two pockets with horizontal slits. Part lined with cotton, three silk covered buttons, the remainer are metal.
