Many decorative early 17th century bags survive, but it is not entirely certain how they were used and worn. They are too delicate and elaborate to serve as receptacles for money carried on one’s person on a daily basis. Few commercial exchanges in the early 17th century required cash, and most household shopping was done by servants. However, they were used as a form of gift-wrapping for the presents of coin that were offered as a New Year’s gifts to the monarch. Reference: Victoria and Albert Museum

Skirts 1900 to 1920. Skirts fitted over the hip and fluted towards the hem were popular during the early 1900s and continued in popularity during the 1910’s. In addition, during the 1910s, a slightly high waistline was fashionable, as was a long tunic-like top worn over an ankle length A-line or ‘hobble’ skirt (cinched in at the hem). During World War I (1914–18), women adopted practical, working clothes and they sometimes wore uniform, overalls and trousers. Reference: The Victoria and Albert Museum.

Fashionable 18th century dresses were usually French, mainly due to the prestige of the Court of Versailles which had occurred during the last twenty years of the 17th century. However, Versailles was no longer the Court of a young King but of an aging monarch whose thoughts were turning to piety and this led to dresses having more rigid lines than in the previous century.

After the death of Louis XIV in 1715, a new fashion arose. Dresses became looser with more flowing lines. The new form of dress was called a “sack” or “sacque” which was a comfortable but rather shapeless garment with small box pleats behind. This period also saw a return of hoops. Instead of height ladies now seemed to aim at width, and the skirt was extended sideways by means of whalebone or rods of osier.

Robes could either be open, showing elaborate petticoats underneath or closed which consisted of a bodice and petticoat, often forming one garment and with no opening at the front. Bodices also had a gap in front filled in by means of a stomacher shaped like a shield and stiffened with pasteboard or busks. Sleeves ended just above or just below the elbow.

By the beginning of the 1770’s, there was a marked change in the general outline of women’s dress which can be summed up as a transition from hoops to a kind of bustle. The bodice also began to be puffed out.

Below are some examples of dresses from the 18th century. Reference: [geolocator_show for=”GB”]A Concise History of Costume by James Laver[/geolocator_show]

17th century jackets are now extremely rare and most of our knowledge is gained from portraits. Some surviving examples are found in museums and occasionally some may come up at auction.

One of the trends of this era was the doublet, a fitted and padded jacket. By the 17th century, doublets were short-waisted. A typical sleeve of this period was full and slashed to show the shirt beneath; a later style was full and paned or slashed to just below the elbow and snug below. Decorative ribbon points were pulled through eyelets on the breeches and the waist of the doublet to keep the breeches in place, and were tied in elaborate bows.

The doublet fell permanently out of fashion in the mid-17th century when Louis XIV of France and Charles II of England established a court costume for men consisting of a long coat, a waistcoat, a cravat, a wig, and breeches—the ancestor of the modern suit. Reference: Wikipedia
