Ladies Hats 1960s. Several styles of hats were popular through the 1960s. The pillbox hat was fashionable, due almost entirely to the influence of Jacqueline Kennedy, who was a style-setter throughout the decade but other styles were also popular, such as wide brimmed felt hats and turban style hats. Many hats would match coats and jackets as in the crocheted jacket and hat shown below.
Wide-brimmed felt hats such as this design by British milliner Edward Mann came in a range of muted shades. Black was the most popular and versatile colour for this fashionable style from the late 1960s into the early 1970s. These supple hats could be shaped and customised to suit any season and a variety of looks. The style was often worn with midi- and maxi-length skirts or tailored ensembles.
Edward Mann was a London based millinery brand which produced high fashion hats. The company label featured the phrase ‘Edward Mann- Always making Fashion’ and included a line drawing of a little face under a flat diamond shaped hat. Edward Mann designed the hats for iconic 1960s television character Emma Peel of ‘The Avengers’ played by Diana Rigg.

A Cher crocheted jacket with matching hat, 1960s A pink, purple, and brown intricately crocheted psychedelic full-length jacket with insets of satin lining, button and snap closures in a diagonal fashion down the front, tube-like decorations at the bodice, bottom, and cuffs, and felting and boning at the collar, bearing an interior label stitched in gold thread and inscribed, “DEL,” accompanied by a matching hat with a gold and jeweled pendant at the center forehead. At the peak of her groovy BoHo chic period, Cher had this coat and hat made exclusively for her.
