Necklace, chain with locket containing perfume bottle and fabric leaves, metal/glass/shell/paper/fabric, designed by Elsa Schiaparelli, Paris, [c 1940]
Long, double-link chain necklace, metal with gold finish, supporting a multi-faceted, multi-coloured, circular piece of cut glass [amber stone?], fixed with claws to a circular, gold metal, twisted rope base. Hanging from the stone is a vertical, oval-shaped, open-work lattice, gold metal locket that is opened by a purse clasp on the right hand side. The locket is decorated with a small, gold metal flower, complete with stem and leaves, entwined in the lattice in the top right hand corner. In the bottom left hand corner is a second flower with large, pink glass petals and a tiny, dark blue glass centre. Resting on the top edge of this flower is a gold metal fly with dark blue, papau shell wing decoration. Much of the gold finish on the locket has worn away exposing a silver coloured metal. The locket contains a miniature perfume bottle in the shape of a woman’s torso, some perfume still remains. The bottle has a gold coloured, metal lid. Encircling the neck and crossing in the front of the torso is a paper tape measure. Manufacturer’s name and perfume name in black, cursive script on the tape measure, written ‘Schiaparelli’ and ‘Shocking’. There are also graduations marked in green on the tape measure. A circular, gold sticker with a hot pink, angular ‘S’ in the centre, secures the ends of the tape measure to the waist area of the torso. The bottle sits within the locket on a bed of several, small, green fabric leaves that are affixed together with glue, the leaves show impressed variegations.
