Swimwear has an interesting history. The swimming costume, or bathing suit, was first used in the mid 1800’s. Prior to that ladies would have worn long gowns which billowed out and there was a period when nothing was worn, especially with men where it was the standard way of bathing until it was banned.

Victorian bathing suits are rare but there are pictures and photographs which show the fashion. Many were made of woolen fabrics.

Originally, swimming costumes were made to cover the figure but as time went by bathing suits became less restrictive and clung more to the body.

Below are some examples and price guides of swimwear throughout the years including a Victorian swimming costume and some costumes from the 1940s.

Many decorative early 17th century bags survive, but it is not entirely certain how they were used and worn. They are too delicate and elaborate to serve as receptacles for money carried on one’s person on a daily basis. Few commercial exchanges in the early 17th century required cash, and most household shopping was done by servants. However, they were used as a form of gift-wrapping for the presents of coin that were offered as a New Year’s gifts to the monarch. Reference: Victoria and Albert Museum

Ladies Shoes 1920s. The T-strap was the most popular shoe style of the roaring twenties, but other shoe styles were also available.  Having been hidden in boots and under long dresses for centuries, the foot was now something to be seen. Lace up boots were still being worn by mature women and young children as well as in winter weather. The slip-on pump was a classic option but now had large buckles, a throwback look from the 18th century. For outings requiring heavy walking the Oxford was the favorite shoe style. A low heel canvas or leather Mary Jane was the closest thing to a flat shoe, usually worn at home or for summertime play at the beach. Reference: The Vintage Dancer.

Dance shoes were very popular  and usually had curved heels and rounded points. Bathing was a popular pastime and rubber shoes were made especially for this exercise. Below are some examples of shoes from the 1920’s including bathing shoes and dancing shoes.

Dresses 1920s. During the 1920s day dresses had a drop waist, which was a belt around the low waist or hip and a skirt that hung anywhere from the ankle on up to the knee, never above. Daywear had sleeves (long to mid-bicep) and sometimes sleeveless,  and a skirt that was straight, pleated, hank hem, or tiered.

Clothing fashions changed with women’s changing roles in society, particularly with the idea of new fashion. Although society matrons of a certain age continued to wear conservative dresses, the sportswear worn by forward-looking and younger women became the greatest change in post-war fashion. The tubular dresses of the ‘teens had evolved into a similar silhouette that now sported shorter skirts with pleats, gathers, or slits to allow motion. The most memorable fashion trend of the Roaring Twenties was undoubtedly “the flapper” look. The flapper dress was functional and flattened the bust line rather than accentuating it. Wikipedia

Ladies Hats 1920s. The most renown hat of the 1920’s was the Cloche hat. The short hairstyle suited this type of hat, which was bell shaped. It was invented by milliner Caroline Reboux in 1908 but gained popularity during the 1920s. There were other types of hats during this period and included turban style hats and included boaters, which were straw hats, and Tam O’Shanter hats.

Skirts 1900 to 1920. Skirts fitted over the hip and fluted towards the hem were popular during the early 1900s and continued in popularity during the 1910’s. In addition, during the 1910s, a slightly high waistline was fashionable, as was a long tunic-like top worn over an ankle length A-line or ‘hobble’ skirt (cinched in at the hem). During World War I (1914–18), women adopted practical, working clothes and they sometimes wore uniform, overalls and trousers. Reference: The Victoria and Albert Museum.
